49 imagesConsistently ranked among the top golf courses in America, Victoria National delivers incredible golf with the character, charm, and hospitality of Southern Indiana. Victoria National earned its title as America's private retreat from a history as unique as the land it's built on. Founding & Design Built atop Peabody Coal Company's long-abandoned Victoria Strip Mine in Southern Indiana, Victoria National was a simple routing for Tom Fazio. “I see 100 great golf holes," said Fazio. "The challenge will be to pick 18." He followed the corridors (the perfect width for fairways) that existed between mining spoil mounds (long since overgrown with trees) and some 40 acres of finger lagoons that had formed as steam shovels carved out coal deposits that hit the water table. The result encompasses 418 acres of bentgrass tees, fairways, and greens. The course at Victoria National was Fazio's sixth private course, and his 10th "Best New" win from Golf Digest, the most any architect has won in a single category. Since its founding in 1998, Victoria National has become a haven for a select group of discerning golf purists. Victoria National is rich in history and has a strong heritage of beautiful land and unparalleled golf.

61 imagesAfter architect Lester George completed his design of No. 66 Kinloch, with its dual fairways, optional routes and triple-fairway ninth, he relished the opportunity to do it again on a site that might give him even more flexibility. He got that chance in hills outside Roanoke, and his Ballyhack design is Kinloch on steroids, with vast landing areas, joined fairways, center bunkers, double greens and a plethora of choices off the tees and into the greens. Call Ballyhack a pluperfect blend of challenging shots, rugged terrain and nasty native roughs, The Ballybunion of southern Virginia.

Ben Hogan, one of golf’s greatest players, helped shape the Club traditions as Tamarisk’s first Golf Professional. Hogan won the Masters, The British Open, and the American Open (now known as the US Open) while actively serving as the Club Pro. Hogan’s successor, Ellsworth Vines, was the second golf pro at Tamarisk and the only athlete in history who had been among the top ten golfers and top ten tennis players in the world. Vines not only won a PGA Tour Event, he won Wimbledon as well. By 1969, golfers everywhere talked about the superior course and its magnificent greens. Tamarisk was selected as one of the four area clubs to play host to the inaugural Palm Springs Desert Classic, which would go on to become known as the Bob Hope Desert Classic. Recognized as one of the most popular and well-known celebrity golf tournaments; the Bob Hope Classic was played at Tamarisk a total of 18 times. Tamarisk was the first desert course to add water hazards to the topography. On the greens, Tamarisk played host to many political figures including President’s Dwight D. Eisenhower, Harry Truman, John F. Kennedy, and Member Gerald Ford. In the 1990’s, the Club expanded its golf programs to provide frequent charity and couples tournaments. Here on the idyllic Monterey Peninsula are a number of these iconic courses, but here, The Preserve Golf Club stands alone, for it is set within a 20,000-acre private nature preserve. Like everything designed here, the land was the first thing taken into consideration when creating the golf course. He was given a map and survey of every archeological and ecological feature and asked to design the golf course of his dreams. What resulted was this 365-acre course that immerses the golfer in Mother Nature. Whether a walking or riding game, Fazio agrees “This is as good as it gets. You don’t really need me, the course and spectacular golf holes are already here.”
